my water resources professor has postponed the due date for a homework assignment and has given me the opportunity to kill some time here this afernoon.

very few of you may recall an entry in 2006 where i posted some random facts about me. now it is 2008 and more random facts about me will be presented to you...

* i hate the idea of smoking, but for some odd reason i find the smell of cigarettes outside to be refreshing if i have to spend more than 5 hours continuously in a building. i learned this when i worked in SF last summer and winter.

* i am really racist when i ride BART. i think this is because on a train i am surrounded by people of all colors and backgrounds and get to see every racial stereotype be played out. why is that _____ people are so loud and obnoxious on the train when everyone is trying to sleep during the evening rush hour????

* the only thing that i order when i go to mcdonalds is chicken mcnuggets.

* i only eat eggs when they are scrambled.

* i would take wine over beer any day of the week.

* i want to learn how to fish.

* i could listen to a particular song 5 times per day for the next 6 months and would still have trouble remembering its lyrics.

* my favorite band is weezer. this is the result of their songs from green album. blue album is a classic, but i listened to green album first and that's what got me hooked on weezer.

* in my opinion: allison cameron > cuddy on HOUSE.

* my biggest pet peeve is drivers that pass you on the right side on the freeway.

* my second biggest pet peeve is people that don't exercise their right to vote.

* i am uncomfortable around dogs. i especially hate it when they start sniffing inappropriate parts of human beings. why arent other people bothered as much about this?

* there have been some days in which i've VOLUNTARILY watched CSPAN for more than 3 hours in a row.

* i will never buy an american car.

* it always takes me 1 hour to fall asleep. i dont know how other people can jump into bed and fall asleep in less than 10 minutes.

* it always takes me 20 to 25 minutes to get out of bed after hearing my alarm clock, even if it is late, such as 12 PM in the afternoon.

* i almost died in 5th grade when i was running on top of big rocks along the pacific ocean in monterrey.

* i have failed only one class in my entire life: fluid mechanics during my junior year of college.

1.) victory in south carolina! with 99% of the results in, barack has received about 55% of the vote, compared to about 27% for hillary clinton. when all votes have been counted, those numbers may be +/- 1%.

2.) i learned that i passed the EIT exam, and will never have to see those EIT proctors ever again!

finally, a competitive women's grand slam championship match! there have been too many lopsided victories and defeats over the last year or so.

as some of you may know, ive taken interest with ana ivanovic lately. she's got a killer forehand, she has a really warm personality (comparable to jelena jankovic) and obviously she is very beautiful. i would like to see her win a grand slam championship one day. but with all of that said, i am still glad that maria won this match. ive been a maria sharapova fan longer, so i guess thats why i rooted for her over ana.

it's almost too hard to root againt ana ivanovic because she is so similar to maria. both are offensive baseliners--they depend on hitting winners from the baseline. both have solid forehands and huge serves. both depend on hitting crisp flat shots, rather than using slice and spin. finally, both are horrible at net--they cannot volley very well. i would say that the major difference is that maria's serve is more consistent and a little more powerful in terms of miles per hour.

It is beginning to look as if the Democratic Party will break historic barriers this year no matter how the party's contest for the presidential nomination concludes. If the nominee is Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York or Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, as seems likely, either a woman or an African American will be a major party's nominee for the first time.

The two leading candidates give California Democrats and independents voting Feb. 5 an interesting choice. Both have been senators for a relatively short time, but both also have other attributes that give them unique perspectives on the country and on the job they seek.

As first lady for eight years, Clinton served as a serious policy adviser to the president, not only on health care, where she famously failed, but on other matters as well. On free trade and reforming welfare, she and Bill Clinton faced down their friends and allies to do what was right, and Hillary Clinton is still paying the price today with some in the left wing of her party.

The Clinton years were tainted by scandal, and Hillary Clinton took her share of hits for those problems. Some were deserved; some were not. Dealing with the constant accusations no doubt toughened her. That toughness is one thing we admire most about her.

But those battle scars are also evidence of a troubling trend in American politics that would likely only intensify if Clinton were to become president. Since her husband's first term, politics has become increasingly polarized, the partisan fights more brutal. The Clintons have been both aggressors and victims in those wars.

Barack Obama, in contrast, would be a fresh face with a new approach and no old scores to settle. His ascension would represent a clean break with the generation that has fought and re-fought the Vietnam War and the cultural upheavals that wracked the 1960s.

As a former community organizer, civil rights lawyer and state legislator, Obama is familiar with real issues people face, and he has worked to solve them on the ground. Obama's lack of experience at the highest levels of government might lead to mistakes. a couple of years ago this would have been a battle of top 10 players. but davenport took some time off from the circuit to have a baby and only now is she trying to play her way back into the top 10 rankings...

watching this tournament as an american is tough. a 7:30 pm start time in australia = a 12:30 am start time in PST, and most of the premier matchups are played at this time (similar to the US open where the good matches are scheduled for prime time viewing in the local area). i was only able to watch from 12:30 to 1:30 before having to sleep.

thoughts about the new hampshire primary

the result was certainly unexpected and hillary definitely deserves the headline of "comeback kid" in tomorrow's newspapers. i am obviously not pleased with tonight's results, although i am guessing my parents are happy (i have never asked them if they support clinton, but they always are going out of their way to say "obama wont win!").

many people are now left wondering why the polls showed obama with large (and sometimes double digit) leads over clinton in the days and hours before actual voting began. i was thinking about this until i came across an entry on mydd.com, which is one of the very good progressive blogs out there (along with dailykos.com and thinkprogress.org):

So the polls had Obama taking a significant bump from Iowa to a large New Hampshire victory over Clinton, and there was only supposed to be a hair of difference between McCain and Romney.

Were the polls crazy?

No. I don't think so. How? Here's a pretty simple theory.

New Hampshire's independent voters ostensibly preferred Obama among the Democrats and McCain among the Republicans. These independents were waiting until the day of the primary election to decide which candidate to turn out for.

Given that the polls looked so much stronger for Obama's victory, many of these independents (who were polling in support of Obama) decided that, with Obama's New Hampshire victory looking so secure, they might as well use their vote to make sure McCain bested Romney. Only, so many of these independent voters thought the same thing that it shifted Obama's comfortable margin of victory to McCain.

So what should the pollsters and the media do? Instead of analyzing how Clinton beat Obama, they should check in with McCain-voting independents who decided in the last couple days to vote in the Republican primary for McCain, and I'll bet you that a good chunk of them saw Obama comfortably winning so they gave their vote to McCain - and that the polls were accurate in terms of gauging their support - they just weren't accurate in gauging whether they'd vote in the Democratic or Republican primaries.

That's my theory anyway.

some optimism for the future

3rd and 4th year college students have become robotic in giving a response to a question about their lives after college. the common response is "i am not sure what i want to do when i graduate." i say this all the time. i hear my coworkers, friends, acquaintances and strangers say this all the time as well. for the most part this statement had fed into my lingering concerns regarding the future because i like to be prepared, i dont like to encounter many surprises and so forth.

however, this last month or so has provided me with some comfort. when i say "i am not sure what i want to do when i graduate," i essentially mean i havent figured out if i want to do transportation, geotechnical or water resources engineering. these three different concentrations can lead to three very different jobs. when i have heard others recently say "i am not sure what i want to do when i graduate," a significant (but not all!) amount of these responders meant it literally. some of these people are in student positions in fields that they are not interested in but are holding on to these positions for financial reasons. others have not pursued positions at all because they simply dont know what they want to do in the coming years.

i may not be sure exactly what i want to do when i graduate, but i am relieved that i have some clue about what i will do. its almost like i am stuck in a room with three doors and i must choose to walk through only one of them. although the task of choosing which door to walk through may be challenging, i am glad that i only have to choose between three doors while those who have no clue about what they are doing will probably have the daunting task of choosing between hundreds upon hundreds of doors...

god that door analogy was pathetic! lol.

i am a robot at work

after talking with my dad about his job for the last couple of years i discovered that he is essentially a robot in terms of his daily work schedule--he leaves home at a certain time every morning, he drinks coffee at a certain time every morning, and so forth. i previously told myself that i wouldnt follow in his footsteps, but low and behold: i have also become a robot in terms of my daily work schedule in SF. i even follow a strict schedule for slacking off--i walk outside at certain times everyday, i walk into the copier room to stretch at certain times everyday, and i even stare at the wall at certain times everyday (11:10 AM to 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM). this afternoon i walked into the donut shop and the cashier already knew what i was going to order even though i have been working for only 1.5 weeks.

2 days of work to go... then school resumes.

i went into work today and there were only 5 other people on my floor. i almost felt guilty for coming into work and collecting a salary for doing very little.

before i present my resolutions for 2008, how about we review the resolutions i made in december of 2006 on this blog for the year of 2007? the resolutions are in italics and my comments are in regular text.

2007 resolutions:

* i will eat breakfast on a more consistent basis. i think skipping meals in the morning has hurt my productivity over the last quarter.

anyone who had a morning class with me for the fall quarter knows that i no longer skip breakfast. i pretty much consumed the same two things at 10 am for the entire quarter: a tiger's milk energy bar or a cinnamon raisin bagel with butter.

* i will cook more often at the apartment in davis. i think i gave away too much of my money to subway and teriyaki express over the last three months.

i definitely did not follow up on this resolution. i eat out every night and i almost have a routine in terms of what i order (sweet and sour pork over rice for mondays! hawaiian roast pork with rice for thursdays! etc.). my daviswiki page essentially has my weekly menu.

* i will stop wasting money on ebay.

i did! i bought few things during 2007.

* i will learn to be "car smart." my mom has always been on my case for not knowing enough about how cars are built and operated in case of an emergency situation (e.g. how to fix a flat tire). i know the basics (oil changing, etc) but probably not enough.

i tried taking the tire pressure of my front tires a couple of months ago and i wasnt able to do so, even with an electronic measuring device. enough said.

* i will "talk" to my mom on a more consistent basis. she always complains to me that i dont "call her during the week like other sons" during collge. lol, im still trying to find those "sons" who make those constant calls... maybe ill try email with her.

if "talk" = "complaining", i was successful!

* i will continue being a more "open minded" democrat. i certainly have made progress since 2003/2004 when i was 100% pro-gun control, against welfare reform and supported anything related to "big government"... however, i still have strong democratic convictions regarding the environment, social security, iraq and gay rights.

i would say that i have lived up to this resolution. overall, i think i am becoming more and more of a libertarian democrat, if there is such a thing on the political map.

* i will practice my cantonese more often. ive been forced to do this lately because ive gone out to alot of lunches with my dad (without my cantonese speaking mom) at chinese restaurants for the last several weeks. but hey, if there is any aspect of my cantonese that can be understood, it would be the words of food because there are some dishes for which i ONLY know its chinese name.

unfortunately i have not practiced my cantonese.

* i will gain weight. i will accomplish this by eating at chipotle, if necessary.

i weighed about 125 in december 2006. now i weigh close to 130.

* i will go to ALL of my lectures when classes resume at davis.

this resolution was made in december 2006, which means it refers to winter quarter 2007. i did not live up to this resolution because of applied science engineering 115. it was hard to go to class everyday because everyone got A's or B's in this course, regardless of whether or not they showed up to take notes.

* i will read at least one book for the year. i havent really (voluntarily) read a book since high school. i think ill read the great gatsby to meet my quota. ive already read that book in the past but it has been so long that reading it now would be like reading a new book.

i didnt read any books for 2006. i read ALOT of political blogs though.

* i will get to (better) know some of my coworkers at the library.

hard to say if i lived up to this resolution, especially since the turnover rate at the library is very high. most of my coworkers stay for only one or two quarters then leave. and since work schedules are different due to differing school schedules, there have been some past and current coworkers that i have never met or only met once.

* i will go to a warriors game. i keep saying that ill go (havent gone since like 3 years ago!) but i always end up being lazy and not wanting to drive and park at the coliseum. ill find one night that im free and drag along my dad with me.

i wanted to go to a game during this break, but who would have ever predicted one year ago that the warriors would make the playoffs in the 2006-2007 season. now they are kicking ass with stephen jackson and cheap tickets are much harder to get as those are generally sold out. what remains are 35-60 dollars tickets in the upper bowl. i still want to go to a game, but i dont think i want to get 35 buck seats when i can sit at home and watch the game on FSN bay area for free.

* i will stop biting my nails.

i actually lived up to this resolution. with exception to the days leading up to the EIT exam in october.

* i will vacuum the floors of my apartment more often. once per quarter is probably not good enough right now.

still vacuuming only once per quarter!

okay, now on to (random) resolutions for 2008:

* i will learn to control my road rage.

* i will drive more "efficiently." this means i will make more gradual stops and accelerations, rather than slamming the brakes and gas pedal, respectively (driving more efficiently will increase the mileage of my car, help the environment and help my wallet).

* i will significantly help my mom and dad in paying my college tuition. something along the lines of one to two thousand dollars.

* i will figure out my concentration within civil engineering by the end of march.

* i will save money and stop buying california lottery scratchers at the supermarket.

* i will play basketball at least once a week. this isnt for the purposes of exercise because i get plenty of that via biking around campus. this is for the purpose of becoming somewhat decent at a sport other than tennis.

* i will donate at least $100 to a charity.

* i will learn how to cook salmon. i like salmon, but i have no idea how to cook it.

* i will travel to a foreign nation. i havent left the country in almost seven years.

* i will go to a sharks game with my dad. hopefully the $19 seats will be available.

upon completion of my pavement engineering project, i plan on smashing the following guitar over the railing near the entryway to my apartment.

this is what happens when you are stressed! and when you buy a 20 dollar guitar that you dont mind losing, lol. up until now i saved this piece of crap as a potential weapon (e.g. if someone tried to break into the apartment). it didnt sound all that bad when my roommate tuned it properly about 2 years ago, but the problem was that it required tuning almost daily or even hourly.

i find it interesting that most people i know do not have a job right now, and a certain percentage of those people have never even held one job in their entire lifetime. why am i one of the few people to work during the school year? i am certainly not poor, because quitting my current job would have no impact whatsoever on my financial stability. and i certainly don't have an easy class schedule, so i wouldnt be able to say i am holding a job to kill time.

personally i think holding a job is great. if you need money, the benefit of work is obvious. if you dont need money, the benefit is being able to tell future employers that you know how to handle the territory that comes with a job. i sometimes wonder how some people are going to graduate college without ever holding a previous job, then go for a job interview and say "this is my first job interview ever" and then expect to be considered a favorite for the position they are going after.

anyways, this is just a thought that went through my mind for about 20 minutes during my night shift at about 9 pm. now i am off to work on my pavement engineering project...

apparently the university believes that their libraries should be open the day after thanksgiving. if you are a student that usually works on fridays, they expect you to come in and work, even though no more than 5 patrons will probably be walking into each library. of those 5, you can almost count on 4 of those patrons walking in to just use the bathroom because they are walking around campus.

so guess who usually works on friday?

overwhelmed by the future

ive been overwhelmed with my thoughts about the future. this feeling began in september when i began my work assignement with the USACE in SF, continued on to october when i had to prepare for the EIT exam, and lives on today as i try to deal with four upper division civil engineering courses for the quarter (spending 4-5 hours writing lab reports each week, spending 4-5 hours on certain homework assignments each week, etc.).

i sometimes wish that i stopped caring about the future so that i could enjoy my life NOW. i sometimes wish that i just dropped all of my engineering commitments for one day or two. people do this all the time--they slack off for several days and frantically resume their duties on the night before something needs to be finished. however, i never find myself doing this because i am always too concerned about doing what is right for my future. in the long run, my obsession with the future will pay off in more ways than one, but its hard to overlook the potential fun i could be having right now.

EIT last saturday, horrible ECI 171 hw due several hours ago (spent almost two hours in office hours trying to figure out one problem), two midterms tomorrow, and two more midterms at the beginning of next week.

here is a glorious summary of my experience taking the EIT exam...

i got up at the lovely hour of 5 AM, although i laid in bed for about 30 minutes. i hopped into my car at 6 AM and arrived at cal expo (you know where water world and the state fair is held?) at 6:20 AM. i sat outside with a classmate and froze my nads off until about 6:45 AM when the doors to cal expo opened and we were directed to the doors of (conference?) buildings. we stood around outside for another 15 minutes when they finally opened the doors to the buildings at 7 AM.

they are ultra strict about what you can bring into the test and what you can do. you cannot bring your own pencil or eraser--they provide that for you. all personal possessions had to be put into a clear bag--no opaque bags allowed, only clear plastic like ziplock sandwich bags to allow for absolute visibility by proctors. you were not allowed to put waterbottles on your desk, and i was criticized by the proctor for doing this before i started my test. this pissed me off because test takers in front and behind me literally had their damn bottles on the table but noone said anything to them. later when i tried taking a sip of water from my bottle, i was again criticized by the proctor (i am not sure why, because drinking water is not prohibited i believe, unless she thought i was in the process of placing that bottle on my desk). finally, i was also taking a small bite of a waffle when the proctor yelled at me because apparently you are not allowed to consume anything larger than a "snack." again, i was pissed because i saw a person behind me eating a huge croissant and no proctor was yelling at him. in general, i didnt like the proctors!!!!!!!!!!!!

the morning portion of the test began at approximately 8 AM and lasted until 12 PM. the morning portion contained 120 questions that were supposed to test your general knowledge of engineering principles. the afternoon portion of the test began at 1:30 PM. i left early at 4:45 PM (i was entitled to stay for 45 more minutes). the afternoon portation contained 60 questions and were more difficult. i was only able to answer about 20 of them and guessed the other 40. as i left cal expo the common words i heard out of people's mouths were "damn, i'll retake it in the spring." my own thought was, "damn, i better make sure my april is free in 2008."

the EIT (engineer-in-training exam) is this saturday and i am defintely not prepared. for those who are unfamiliar with the exam, here is the gist of what you have to do: show up at 7 am for the AM portion of the exam, have a 30 minute to 1 hour lunch, then resume testing at 1 pm for the PM portion of the exam until about 5 pm. the entire test is multiple choice and covers general civil engineering topics such as chem, engineering econ, statics, fluids, etc.

i should be studying for the EIT but i am not. its hard to study during the school year! or am i just lazy?

7 days of work

i have completed my 7 days of work in SF. i shall return in the winter, and probably next summer.

what did i learn and/or take away from my experience in a professional engineering environment? i think my understanding of professionalism in the workplace was greatly enhanced.

* when i showed up for work every morning and left every afternoon, i did not have to check in or out with anyone or anything, despite my status as a student employee. all i had to do was submit a handwritten timesheet at the very beginning of the week. despite this freedom, i promptly arrived at 8:30 am every morning and left at 4:30 pm every afternoon. there was major temptation to arrive 10 minutes late and leave 10 minutes early each day, but i chose not to do so.

* when i wanted to take a break during the day, i didnt have to consult with anyone or anything. and quite frankly, i could have taken as many breaks as i wanted to because no one was nearby my cubicle to view my actions. however, i only took 2 breaks per day, usually 10 minutes in length.

* when i was actually in the office, no one really went to me for assignments. if i really wanted to, i could have sat for the entire day and read email. however, i tried to make myself available to others by walking around to their cubicles and informing them of my presence and availability. most of the work that i completed came from assignments that i sought.

1.) the summer is quickly coming to a close...

finally, i have started work in SF, which was long delayed due to paperwork and etc. i am going to work for one week and the first two days of next week before i return to davis for fall classes (return to work in winter and next summer). if there is something significant that i can take away from my short week of work, it is this: 8-hour work days take some getting used to and commuting to SF isn't always fun. even though college days can span the entire day (e.g. 8 am class to 7 pm-10 pm lab), you usually get several blocks of free time during the day. i have come to discover that an 8 hour work day isn't necessarily hard in terms of the actual work you are doing, but rather having to be occupied for 8 consecutive hours without an hour/two hour nap/break time can take some getting used to. oh, and walking to your office in SF can be interesting. my walk along market street (not the nice area near embarcadero, but near civic center) greets me with the smell of urine and the sight of a homeless guy asking every person who walks by for money.

summary of my trip with my family:

1.) everytime i sat down to play the slots or roulette table, i got carded. not surprising since i am a 21 year old that is only 130 lbs.

2.) i was playing 5 cent slots at the new york-new york and was fairly sucessful. at one particular slot i had put in 1 dollar and got back 20 dollars. i decided to leave that machine, but i eventually came back and let my dad use that slot. he put in a couple of bucks and won a mini jackpot of $300. if i had stayed at that machine i could have gotten myself $300. damn!

maria has only dropped 2 games in 4 sets through the first two rounds. i was already convinced after the first four games of tonight's match that she would win, and therefore turned to a different channel at that time. i dont think she will lose more than 3 games in a match until the fourth round when she may face nicole vaidisova.

the second to last game of the match was interesting as vinci began to gain major crowd support because she was on the verge of winning zero games for the entire match. she was able to win that particular game and celebrate as if she had won the US open championship.

there has yet to be obvious evidence of senator larry craig being a closeted homosexual (e.g. mark foley sending lewd messages over the internet to a young male house page [student employee] or florida state representative bob allen soliciting oral sex in a public restroom from an undercover cop), but things are not looking good for senator craig.

FYI: larry craig has supported constitutional amendments baning gay marriage (see here and here), and voted against prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation (see here).

the US open began this afternoon, with the most notable match featuring roger federer cruising over american scoville jenkins in three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

more importantly, maria will have her first match of the open tomorrow night against roberta vinci of italy. the two ladies have never faced each other. tune in at 4 pm (PST) on the usa network on cable.

i will be a lazy ass for the next two weeks and have my ass planted in a seat in my living room as i watch tennis before heading to las vegas and colorado.
